There was a time when men could get away with being unkempt; when male grooming meant little more than shaving and having a haircut from time to time. Those days are gone, and these days, guys want to put as much effort into their appearance as their female peers. I mean, who doesn’t want to look fresh-faced and fantastic?

If you’re a guy who’s just getting into skincare and you want to ensure you always look as fresh-faced as possible, here are some tips that will help you to take much better care of your skin…

Cleanse, tone and moisturise.

If you want to look as fresh-faced and youthful as possible, then there is no getting around the fact that you need to cleanse, tone and moisturise daily. Doing so will remove dirt and oil, not to mention various pollutants, and give you a plump, healthy complexion that simply radiates good grooming. It may also take you a while to find the products that best work with your skin type, but once you do, you will be really looking good.

Never step out without sunscreen.

So many men in this country will only apply sunscreen if they are heading out on a hot day or going on holiday if they even bother to apply it all, but if you are serious about improving the appearance of your skin and looking fresh-faced, you should really be applying sunscreen every day. Why? Because the sun’s rays are not only extremely dangerous to your skin, but also because a high SPF sun lotion will prevent the sun’s UV rays from prematurely ageing your skin. You’ll be less likely to develop fine lines and wrinkles, and you can hold off on the grizzly old guy look for a few more years!

Exfoliate regularly.

Daily exfoliation is often recommended, but you may only need to exfoliate once or twice a week if you have particularly sensitive skin because overdoing it can cause redness and skin damage. Why exfoliate at all? Because it is the only effective way to get rid of dead skin which can give you an unhealthy sallow complexion. Not only that but it will help to unclog your pores which means you will be less likely to get an outbreak of acne.

Another great thing about regular exfoliation for guys is the fact that it will soften those facial hair follicles, which means you will be able to accomplish a smoother, more comfortable shave.

Use eye cream.

Yes, men can use eye cream, and if you want to avoid having crinkly eyes that can make you look tired, then it is a really good idea to apply a little hydrating eye cream to the area in question each day. Oh, and try to choose an eye cream that has been formulated with men in mind because they will probably work best for you.

Apply lip balm.

If you’re a guy, unless you’re into lipstick, it can be harder to get your lips looking good, especially if they are prone to cracking, but cracked, flaky lips never look good and they can make you look older than you actually are. That’s why you should invest in a good hydrating lip balm and use it daily. The best lip balms contain SPF to protect against the sun as well as other difficult weather situations. Apply at least once in the morning and once before bed, using in between whenever you feel the need.

Trim your facial hair.

The best way to look fresh-faced is to completely remove your beard and any other facial hair you may have - well not the eyebrows, but you should pluck or wax them to prevent them from looking like an overgrown old man’s eyebrows. However, if you would prefer to keep your facial hair, the very least you will need to do in order to look well-groomed is to keep it trimmed at all times. The second it starts to grow out of its neatly manicured shape, get snipping!

Keep it clean too.

If you have a beard and/or moustache, then you are never going to look as fresh-faced as you potentially could if you do not take the time to keep your beard clean. You should, ideally, be washing and shampooing your beard at least as often as you wash your hair. You should also regularly comb your beard if it is long enough, and maybe invest in some beard oil or balm to keep it looking glossy and well-conditioned. This will help your beard to smell good too, which is always a nice bonus.

Eat well and drink water.

Of course, there is only so much that a good skincare and grooming regime can do, and if you want to look truly fresh-faced, you will also need to take a look at your diet. Diets that are high in sugars and trans-fats are likely to dry out your skin and cause free radicals to form, which will cause you to age prematurely. The good news is, a diet that is rich in fruits, veggies and healthy fats will do the opposite and keep your skin looking young, healthy and radiant for longer.

Drinking plenty of water will also help to keep your complexion clear and your skin youthful and plump, so be sure to switch some of your daily sodas or whatever with pure water - your skin will thank you for it.

Use a little makeup.

Of course, sometimes your skin will not be looking its best for whatever reason, and when that happens, using a little concealer to hide blemishes or dark circles or whatever is a really good way of retaining your fresh-faced look even when your skin isn’t behaving. The key to doing this well is to choose the makeup that matches your skin tone as closely as possible and using it as sparingly as possible.

Taking good care of your skin is something you should be doing whoever you are and the above tips will help you to do just that! x Neil.
